Why should Apple revolutionize electronics manufacturing? Not just because it’s the right thing to do—even a company as successful as Apple can’t afford to spend billions just to make itself feel better. The more pressing problem is its image; if Apple ignores this problem, the specter of “conflict iPhones” is going to swallow its brand. While there is no evidence to suggest that Apple’s factories are any worse than those of its competitors—in fact, many of them use the same contractors to make their devices—no company benefits more from low-cost Chinese labor than Apple. If it continues to deliver monster earnings, scrutiny of its factories isn’t going to stop. ¿Está pensando en comprar un iPad? ¿Un nuevo iPhone? ¿Un portátil Macbook? Si es así, tal vez le interese leer este artículo. La mejor inversión con Apple es comprar sus acciones, no sus productos. Un ejemplo: el primer iPod, que salió a la venta el 23 de octubre de 2001 y tenía una memoria de cinco gigas, costaba 399 dólares. Si en vez de comprarlo hubiera dedicado esa cantidad a hacerse con acciones de la compañía (a 9,07 cada una), sus participaciones valdrían ahora 19.649 dólares (unos 15.000 euros) si no tenemos en cuenta comisiones e impuestos. Los nuevos libros de texto electrónicos de Apple son claramente más atractivos que los tradicionales y no tengo dudas que los alumnos los disfrutarán más. Sin embargo, no presentan un cambio radical desde el punto de vista pedagógico. En los hechos, son muy similares a lo que en la década de los 90 se conoció como “libros multimedia”, que combinaban textos, ilustraciones y vídeos en formato CD-ROM.
Los medios tradicionales (textos, imágenes, vídeos) son excelentes para comunicar datos. En ese sentido, los libros educativos electrónicos ofrecen más información que los tradicionales. Pero los estudiantes necesitan más que datos: necesitan experiencia. A charming interactive story app from Moonbot takes a pre-linguistic dystopia as the setting for a adventure tale about the invention of the alphabet. Following Moonbot’s first story “The Fantastic Flying Books of Morris Lessmore,” Numberlys also takes a literary angle of a more cinematic quality. In part an homage to Fritz Lang’s “Metropolis,” the goose-stepping society of the Numberlys is less than intimidating as its citizens waddle across the frame. (via Numberlys)

Pantalla global, la exposición inaugurada ayer en el Centro de Cultura Contemporánea de Barcelona (CCCB), versa sobre esto y sobre el hecho de que es a través de las pantallas como el hombre moderno contempla el mundo. Las pantallas ocupan todos los espacios, son al tiempo espejos y ventanas de la sociedad, desde la televisión a los ordenadores, los monitores de vigilancia o los teléfonos móviles. Inspired by the number of people that the Khan Academy’s free video lectures reached, Stanford professor Sebastian Thrun put his own artificial intelligence class online and enrolled 160,000 students. After scrambling to accommodate so many pupils, he came away from the experience with a new vision of education so different that he says he “can’t teach at Stanford again.” Instead, he’s starting an online university called Udacity. Thrun hopes to teach about 200,000 students per class — including grading exams and quizzes — in contrast to the mere hundreds taught at a brick-and-mortar university. The first two classes, starting February 20th, will teach students around the world to build a search engine or program a robotic car, and enrollment is free. Los Trabajos Prácticos comenzó a funcionar en 2004 con Huili Raffo, alma mater del proyecto, y Ernesto Semán, uno desde Londres, el otro desde Nueva York, coordinando el desarrollo del sitio. La idea original del mismo era “hacer un último intento por humanizar la escena política argentina”. Enseguida se sumó un nutrido equipo de colaboradores, entre los cuales estaban Esteban Schmidt, Quintín, Ivana Steinberg, Santiago Llach, Hernán Iglesias Illia, Eliseo Brener, Roberto Gargarella y Fabián Casas. “Sin ser oficialista ni opositor en sí mismo, Los Trabajos Prácticos es un experimento en otro tipo de progresismo, uno que ignora a propósito las jerarquías propias de la experiencia militante y la direccionalidad de las agendas corporativas”, escribió Raffo.
