To celebrate its seventh birthday, YouTube boasts that 72 hours of video is being uploaded to the site every minute. That figure was 48 hours one year ago, meaning YouTube is experiencing strong growth in video uploads. This growth in uploads may indicate that emerging competition from social video apps like Viddy and Socialcam isn’t yet cause for concern at YouTube. But if Facebook buys either Viddy or Socialcam, then suddenly YouTube would have a problem - because then there would be a large competitor offering easy video sharing. Another concern for YouTube is that its video views have decreased every month this year. After a record traffic year in 2011 and an all-time peak of 21.8 billion video views served in January, monthly views started to go backwards. what’s the nature of the reward in a dog’s brain? Is it the prospect of the hot dog alone that triggers the response, or does pleasing a human by doing a drill correctly play a part? As I wrote in this Time story in 2009, a new field called canine cognition is taking shape to address these questions. Until now, canine cognition studies have been limited to basic psychological experiments, such as seeing how well dogs can make sense of a pointed hand. The Linked Learning workshop at WWW2012 (officially the ’2nd International Workshop on Learning and Education with the Web of Data’), focused as it was on Linked Data in an educational setting, provided the perfect forum to begin sharing our ideas in this area. I presented a paper, co-authored with several Talis Education colleagues, titled ‘Assembling and Applying an Education Graph based on Learning Resources in Universities‘ (PDF), that describes how, with the support and encouragement of our customers, we pool data from multiple instances of Talis Aspire Campus Edition in order to provide novel services back to those customers. Que un videojuego independiente latinoamericano gane un premio a la innovación en el festival más grande de videojuegos independientes del mundo ya es una alegría, pero si a eso se suma el hecho de que uno conoce a la persona que lo diseñó y programó por haber sido compañero de trabajo, la alegría es doble. La noticia es que “Storyteller”, creado por el programador y diseñador argentino Daniel Benmergui, ganó ayer el premio Nuovo a la innovación en videojuegos otorgado en el IGF (Independent Games Festival) celebrado en San Francisco, Estados Unidos. Este festival es el equivalente en videojuegos del Festival Sundance de Cine independiente y se viene celebrando hace 14 años. Busca premiar la creatividad de los juegos “indies”, hechos fuera de la industria tradicional y con presupuestos mucho más reducidos que el de los juegos comerciales. Pity the book. It’s dead again. Last I checked, Googling “death of the book” produced 11.8 million matches. The day before it was 11.6 milion. It’s getting unseemly. Books were once such handsome things. Suddenly they seem clunky, heavy, almost fleshy in their gross materiality. Their pages grow brittle. Their ink fades. Their spines collapse. They are so pitiful, they might as well be human.
